How to review dates and numbers for a target locale
Dates and number formats can be interpreted differently across locales. Reviewing them together helps avoid ambiguity when content, prices or reports are adapted for another audience.
Start with the right material.
- What you provide
- source and localized copy provided side by side.
- The intended result
- Flag changed numeric values and ambiguous date formatting without currency conversion.
How the workflow works.
Specify the intended locale and identify dates, decimal separators, grouping marks and currency notation. Preserve the underlying value while proposing a clearer display format.
What to check in the result.
Check ambiguous source values before converting them. Formatting cannot resolve an unknown date convention or exchange rate, and changing a currency symbol is not a currency conversion.
Import the CSV with a consistent delimiter and inspect text identifiers, dates and amounts before using spreadsheet totals. Keep the original file available while checking any automatic type conversion.
Learn from the worked example.
The downloadable CSV example uses these columns: Field, Source value, Localized value, Issue. Compare a complete record with the source before sorting, combining or importing your own output.
The supplied example is illustrative. It is not a recorded run on your data.
