Can I paraphrase a quotation?
Keep direct quotations exact, or remove quotation marks and clearly attribute a faithful paraphrase. Preserve the original citation.
Why did my rewrite sound more certain?
Restore qualifying words such as may, roughly or in this sample. They carry evidence, even when they make prose less punchy.
